BINTULU: Youth need to evaluate information in the digital era wisely, especially on social media, to avoid the spread of false information that can threaten harmony in society.
In stating this Bintulu Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, said while technological progress provides many opportunities for youth it also brings risks when misinformation is easily spread.
He said, with just one click, unauthentic information can spread widely, and that young people as the main users of the internet need to be critical in evaluating content on social media.
“They need to be able to distinguish between true and false information. Don’t believe easily or jump to conclusions. Spread constructive information, not provocative content that can damage unity,” he said.
He said this in his speech read by Supreme Council member of the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Joshua Ting at the PDP Youth Dinner here, Friday night.
Tiong, who is Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, also voiced his concern over a handful of political youth leaders who use their platforms to raise sensitive issues that have the potential to cause division.
He urged them to instead use their influence to promote unity and participation in beneficial community activities.
“Participation in community organisations not only enriches life experience, but also fosters the leadership skills needed to build a harmonious society,” he added.
He also reminded youth about the importance of respecting cultural diversity which is the basis of national unity.
“Malaysia is a country rich in racial and cultural diversity. As the young generation, we should be the best example in fostering respect and inclusion between races. This is the basis for strong unity,” he added.
