KUCHING: Sarawak Energy has issued a public safety alert as continuous heavy rainfall triggers widespread flooding, landslides and power outages across several districts in Sarawak.
The utility company, which has placed its operations on high alert, is calling on residents to exercise extreme caution when navigating flood-affected areas where hidden hazards pose significant risks.
“Public safety remains our top priority,” the company said in a statement released On Saturday, warning that floodwaters can conceal dangerous obstacles, including fallen power lines, open manholes and sharp debris that could lead to electric shock, fire or serious injury.
Sarawak Energy has outlined essential safety protocols for the public to follow during the crisis.
When flooding begins, residents are advised to immediately switch off their main electrical supply at the household switchboard as water levels rise. Electrical appliances should be unplugged and relocated to higher ground to prevent damage and electrical hazards.
The public must maintain a safe distance from electrical infrastructure that may have been compromised by severe weather conditions. Strong winds can topple electricity poles, leaving live power lines on the ground. Under no circumstances should anyone approach fallen power lines, which may remain energised and deadly.
Those using boats to navigate flooded areas face an additional danger: overhead power lines. Rising water levels significantly reduce clearance from high-voltage lines, creating electrocution risks for boat operators and passengers.
Sarawak Energy warns that fallen power lines continue to pose risks even after floods subside. Any electrical appliances that have been submerged must not be used due to severe electrocution and fire dangers.
Before restoring power to homes or buildings, residents must engage licensed and qualified electricians to conduct thorough inspections of all wiring systems. Only after professional clearance should the main power supply be switched back on.
Sarawak Energy has deployed technical teams across affected regions, maintaining 24-hour readiness to ensure electrical facilities can operate safely.
The public is encouraged to report power outages or unsafe infrastructure through multiple channels: the Customer Care Centre at 1300-88-3111, email at customercare@energy.com, the SEB Cares mobile app or web portal, or by chatting with CARINA, their virtual agent.
Residents are reminded to stay informed through official safety advisories and to avoid taking unnecessary risks during this period of severe weather.
