BETONG: This division is set to gain stronger connectivity and greater capacity to host business and knowledge events with the development of the Bebuling Short Take-Off and Landing Airport (STOLport) and a new mini convention centre.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said the Bebuling STOLport would have a significant impact on Betong by improving access between the division and Kuching.
He said the facility could support scheduled flights, with the frequency increased according to demand.
“The impact is very big because this is the only facility that we provide for Betong,” he said during a press conference after officiating at the Sarawakku Sayang programme in Betong today (Sept 26).
Abang Johari said the journey between Betong and Kuching could take only about 14 to 15 minutes by air, providing a faster alternative for travellers.
He said Betong could begin with scheduled flights through the STOLport, with more flights added if demand increased.
Abang Johari said the facility could eventually develop into a hub linking Betong with Kuching Airport and, in the future, destinations such as Tanjung Manis.
He said its impact would extend beyond business and commercial travel, as improved connectivity could also encourage expatriates and other visitors working in Kuching to travel to Betong and explore its attractions.
“This is not only for business or commercial purposes, but also for domestic tourism,” he said.
Asked during a press conference after the officiating the event when the STOLport was expected to begin operations, Abang Johari said the facility first had to be completed and the necessary requirements fulfilled.
Separately, Abang Johari approved the establishment of a mini convention centre in Betong to support forums, conferences and knowledge-sharing activities.
He said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah had raised concerns that Betong faced difficulties bringing experts to the division because there was no suitable venue for such activities.
“There are forums, but where do we put them? We only have Stadium Kalong Ningkan,” he said.
Abang Johari said the new centre would provide a suitable venue for experts to visit Betong and share their knowledge with local communities, particularly young people.
He said the facility would be similar to the mini convention centre in Lawas.
The Premier said having better facilities would allow Betong to host more forums and bring experts to the division, giving local communities and young people greater exposure to new knowledge and expertise.
