Beefing up border security to curb narcotics-related crimes

KUCHING: The Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (JSJN) Malaysia will be bolstering border security collaboration between Sarawak and Sabah to curb narcotics-related crimes effectively.

Its director, Datuk Seri Khaw Kok Chin said this during a work visit to the General Operations Force (PGA) Brigade Headquarters here relating to the initiative on Thursday.

He announced significant reinforcements for JSJN’s operations in Sarawak and Sabah. This includes an addition of 12 new personnel positions distributed across 10 districts in Sarawak. Notable increases include two positions each in Song and Tatau, with one additional post each in districts such as Matu Daro and Julau.

“Sarawak’s state government has also played a pivotal role in enhancing these efforts. Premier Sarawak’s contribution of four Toyota Hilux vehicles valued at RM639,934.40 will support the Secretariat Nucleus Narcotics (SNN) Sarawak.

“Furthermore, the state has allocated RM1.77 million for the procurement of advanced drug detection equipment, including 19 Instant Visual Drug Detectors and two Handheld Backscatters,” he said.

Between January and November 2024, Sarawak’s narcotics division arrested 9,884 individuals for drug offences, including 492 high-profile drug traffickers. During this period, drugs worth RM37.23 million were seized, with major operations yielding significant results:

To dismantle drug syndicates’ financial networks, JSJN Sarawak has seized assets worth RM4.1 million this year, including vehicles, jewelry, and cash.
