EVERY goal has a moment that captures the world’s attention.
First comes the roar of the crowd.
Then, players run towards each other in celebration, while the scorer’s name is repeated across headlines and social media.
But what we rarely see is everything that happened before that moment: the conversations within the team, the trust in each other’s abilities, and the understanding between teammates who have spent countless hours learning each other’s movements.
As football fans around the world (including those who are not usually fans but have now caught the football fever) follow the FIFA World Cup, we are often drawn to the spectacular moments: the last-minute winners, the unexpected victories, and the players who rise to the occasion when pressure is at its highest.
Yet behind every memorable goal is a story that began long before the ball reached the net.
It began during training sessions.
During team meetings.
During difficult conversations.
And during moments when players had to learn how to trust someone else.
A striker needs to trust that a teammate will deliver the right pass.
A defender needs to communicate clearly to prevent mistakes.
A goalkeeper needs to organise those in front of them within a matter of seconds.
Essentially, communication is what makes these moments possible.
As we watch these moments unfold, perhaps this is the perfect time to reflect on a lesson we often overlook in our own lives.
We often focus on the final outcome, celebrating achievements or resolving problems after they happen, but rarely consider the conversations that shaped those results.
A successful project at work may appear to be the result of one person’s idea, but behind it are countless discussions, disagreements, adjustments and compromises.
A strong family relationship may look effortless from the outside, but it is often built through years of honest conversations, patience and the willingness to understand one another.
A child’s confidence does not appear overnight. It grows through small conversations where parents listen, encourage and remind them that their voice matters.
The truth is, the most meaningful outcomes in life are often supported by conversations that nobody else hears.
In today’s fast-paced world, we sometimes underestimate the power of communication because it does not always produce immediate results. Just like everything else, it takes time.
Even a chef needs years of practice to perfect a signature dish. Hence, one needs to recognise that a conversation does not always solve a problem instantly.
An apology does not always repair a relationship immediately, and a discussion does not always lead to agreement.
But just like a football team preparing for a crucial match, every meaningful conversation builds something, even when the results are not immediately visible.
From the football matches you have watched so far, I trust you would agree that the best teams in football are not necessarily those with the most talented individuals.
Rather, they are often the ones who understand each other best, creating synergy that allows them to achieve extraordinary outcomes.
When that understanding is formed, words are sometimes no longer needed.
Players instinctively know when to move forward, when to provide support and when to step back to allow someone else to shine.
The same applies to workplaces and relationships.
A team where everyone wants to be the star will eventually struggle.
However, a team where people communicate, trust and support one another creates an environment where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
Perhaps this is why some of the most important people in our lives are not always the loudest voices.
They may be the ones who encourage us when we doubt ourselves, or the ones who quietly help us prepare for our biggest moments.
They may never receive recognition, but their contributions are woven into every success we achieve.
This World Cup season is a timely reminder that football is never just about the player who scores the winning goal.
It is about the collective effort behind that moment.
The same is true in life, where behind every achievement is a conversation.
Behind every breakthrough is someone who believed in us, encouraged us or challenged us.
And behind every success is a network of people who helped make it possible.
So the next time we witness a remarkable goal, we should look beyond the celebration.
Think about the passes that came before it.
The communication that guided it.
And the trust that created it.
Because in football, as in life, the moment everyone remembers is often built on conversations nobody sees.
