NEW YORK: Belgium has joined a number of other countries in New York in announcing its recognition of a Palestinian state, reported German Press Agency (dpa).
“Through this initiative, we continue to support international law, particularly the right to self-determination of peoples,” Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever said on Monday in New York at a conference on the Middle East conflict convened by France and Saudi Arabia.
The meeting, held a day before the start of the high-level debate week at the UN General Assembly, aimed to give new momentum to the two-state solution.
“The two-state solution solution is not dead,” De Wever said. “It is bruised, but it can be revived and it must be for the sake of both peoples.”
Several major Western countries have recently announced their intention to recognise Palestinian statehood.
Around 150 nations worldwide have now done so. – BERNAMA-dpa
