MIRI: The launch of the Pusat Inkubator dan Bimbingan Usahawan (PIBU) in Beluru marks a decisive push to professionalise rural entrepreneurship and accelerate local participation in Sarawak’s formal economy.
The centre is expected to play a pivotal role in reshaping the district’s economic landscape by equipping young entrepreneurs and aspiring contractors with the tools, credentials and institutional support needed to compete beyond traditional rural sectors.
Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government and Marudi assemblyman Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil said PIBU reflects the state government’s strategy to drive inclusive growth through entrepreneurship, innovation and digitalisation.
He said the initiative is aligned with the development agenda championed by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, which places strong emphasis on building economic capacity at the grassroots.
“PIBU ensures local entrepreneurs, particularly the younger generation, are properly licensed, formally registered and able to access government grants and financing schemes,” he said at the centre’s opening ceremony on Monday (Jan 19).
Penguang said rural youth must move decisively into modern economic activities such as contracting, e-commerce and digital services to remain competitive and economically resilient.
He added that PIBU would serve as a practical entry point for rural entrepreneurs to transition from informal ventures into sustainable, compliant businesses.
Meanwhile, Jim Apoi, senior assistant director of the Contractor and Supplier Development Unit under the Sarawak State Financial Secretary’s Office, said PIBU is designed to reduce early-stage barriers faced by new entrepreneurs.
“The centre provides free temporary office facilities to help aspiring contractors and business owners manage company registration and licensing more efficiently.”
The launch coincided with the start of the Quality and Competitive Contractor and Entrepreneur Development Course, involving 76 participants.
The programme focuses on strengthening skills in management, finance, marketing and professional standards in line with current industry requirements.
Also present were Beluru district officer Charles Aloysius Lisu, Industry and Development Division head Sapuan Mawi, Marudi District Council chairman Councillor Edward Mendai and district department heads.
