KUCHING: The Benak Festival should be viewed as a platform for the younger generation to showcase their talents and promote local innovations, says Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Francis Harden Hollis.
He noted that the event is more than just a cultural celebration, describing it as a platform to highlight the identity of Sri Aman.
“At the same time, it generates economic opportunities and promotes community-based tourism. I strongly emphasise the importance of a comprehensive plan that involves inter-agency cooperation, community participation, and opportunities for young people to showcase their talents and local innovations.”
Harden made the remarks after receiving a courtesy visit from the Sri Aman Benak Festival 2025 Main Committee, led by Sri Aman Division Resident Mahra Salleh, who also chairs the committee.
Harden, who also serves as advisor to the Benak Festival, reiterated his commitment to strengthening the implementation of the annual event as a state-level iconic celebration that can elevate Sri Aman’s profile.
Earlier, he was briefed on the preparations and comprehensive planning for the Sri Aman Benak Festival 2025, scheduled to take place from Sept 19 to 21.
He was also informed of the festival’s diverse line-up of programmes, including water sports, cultural performances, agency exhibitions, local entrepreneur showcases, educational and tourism activities, and digital promotional initiatives aimed at positioning Sri Aman as a premier destination in central Sarawak.
The Benak Festival is a prestigious annual event that celebrates the unique tidal bore phenomenon of Batang Lupar.
This year’s edition is expected to be more vibrant and inclusive, aligning with efforts to position Sri Aman as a dynamic and sustainable rural tourism and social development hub.
Also present were Sri Aman Deputy Resident Charlie Keling, Sri Aman District officer Shariff Bujang and Sri Aman Division UKAS officer Zaidil Ripin.
