PADAWAN: The Bengoh-Danu area in Padawan has been selected as the pilot site for a modern paddy cultivation project using the “caressing-heal-paddy” method, specifically designed for hilly terrains.
Deputy Minister of Transport (Land and Aviation) Datuk Dr Jerip Susil said this initiative is a crucial first step toward enhancing the country’s self-sufficiency in rice production.
“Local rice production remains low, and we are heavily reliant on imports.
“Our target is to achieve 70 per cent self-sufficiency within five years,” he said during the launch of a public infrastructure project ceremony held recently.
Dr Jerip, who is also Mambong assemblyman, added that this method is expected to benefit farmers working on slopes and could serve as a model for other areas in Sarawak.
He also thanked those contributing to rural development efforts, including projects for clean water supply and education.
“Since 2017, a total of RM1.7 million has been allocated for development in Kampung Annah Sadir and SK St. Bernard Sadir,” he said.
Dr. Jerip appealed to the younger generation to seize opportunities in modern agriculture to secure the economic future and sustainability of rural communities.
