BETONG: In a powerful display of support to sepak takraw, Betong MP Datuk Dr Richard Rapu, presented a RM5,000 contribution to the Layar Hills Sepak Takraw Club during the closing ceremony of the 2025 Betong Open Men’s and Women’s Sepak Takraw Championship.

The 2025 Betong Open Men’s and Women’s Sepak Takraw Championship attracted 16 men’s teams and 6 women’s teams from around the Betong as well as teams from the Sarikei and Sri Aman.

The tournament held at Dewan Panglima Rentap in Betong was organised by the Layar Hills Sepak Takraw Club.

Dr Richard was present to witness the final matches and subsequently officiated the award presentation ceremony for the winners.

In his address, he expressed full support for the organisation of such tournaments, recognizing them as an excellent platform to foster a sports culture among the youth.

He made this statement during the closing ceremony of the 2025 Betong Open Men’s and Women’s Sepak Takraw Championship on Sunday (Feb 24).

Dr Richard also pointed out the importance of tournaments like this in identifying young talent with the potential to represent the state and country in larger competitions.

As a sign of support for the development of sports in Betong, he presented a RM5,000 contribution cheque to the Layar Hills Sepak Takraw Club to support the organization of the tournament.

He also congratulated all parties involved in making the event a success and expressed hopes for more youth participation in future editions.

Also present at the ceremony were Betong district officer Laga Kueh, assistant Youth and Sports officer of Betong Erwan Dzulfadli, and chairman of the Layar Hills Sepak Takraw Club, Hilster.
