KUCHING: The Ministry of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development (KPWK) has expressed appreciation for the continuation of welfare assistance under Budget 2024.

Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said that with this assistance, more poor families, older adults, and people with disabilities will benefit. She suggested that benefits can be even greater if the poverty line index is adjusted.

She commended the federal government’s efforts to support and encourage independence for people with disabilities (PwD).

“However, this should not be confined solely to PwDs; it should also include single mothers and ‘young’ senior citizens,” she said when contacted by New Sarawak Tribune today.

On the RM 1.2 billion set aside for the care of the chronically homeless and disabled, Fatimah recommended that some of this allocation also cover increased allowances for caregivers of the chronically ill.

“Nevertheless, as the population of the elderly continues to increase it is only right that more allocation is provided for their well-being,” Fatimah added.
