MIRI: Reliable, high-quality internet access is vital to daily life, communication, digital education and economic opportunities, particularly in remote communities.

Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring), Datuk Gerawat Gala, said he is committed to working closely with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and relevant agencies to strengthen digital development in remote areas, in line with Sarawak’s and the nation’s aspirations for inclusive growth.

He said improving stable and quality internet access remains essential to support residents’ daily activities, enhance communication, enable digital education, and create wider economic opportunities for rural communities, particularly in remote areas such as Mulu.

Gerawat, who is also Mulu state assemblyman, attended a discussion session with the MCMC Miri Branch on Wednesday (Feb 4) to review efforts to enhance coverage and service stability in several remote localities.

The meeting focused on the implementation and improvement of Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) services in areas including Long Medamud, Ba Tik A, Ba Tik B and Long Lobang, with emphasis on ensuring rural communities are not left behind amid rapid digitalisation.

During the session, technical issues involving existing services were raised, including the current status of BWA infrastructure and the need for follow-up measures to further improve internet service delivery.

He stressed that continuous collaboration between stakeholders is vital to accelerate digital connectivity and ensure more inclusive development for communities in remote parts of Sarawak.
