KUCHING: The Borneo International Consumer Expo (BICE) 2025, the first of its kind in Sarawak and the largest consumer expo in the state, took place at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) from Feb 20-23.
The event brought together businesses, consumers, and traders from across the Borneo region, marking a milestone in regional trade and collaboration.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian praised BICE 2025 as a key step in boosting regional trade, business ties and cultural exchange in Borneo.
“This is not only the biggest consumer expo in Sarawak, but it also brings the best of Borneo together, be it consumers, businesses, or cultures,” he said during the last day of the expo.
Dr. Sim acknowledged the event’s success, highlighting the participation of entrepreneurs, businesses, and consumers from Sarawak, Sabah, Indonesia, and Brunei, with over 400 exhibition booths.
He emphasised that such platforms are vital in showcasing products, services, investment opportunities, and business networking.
While acknowledging the importance of digitalisation in modern business transactions, Dr. Sim underscored the irreplaceable value of in-person interactions.
“Even though digitalisation is crucial, nothing can replace the atmosphere and personal engagement of a face-to-face event. Online platforms allow easy access, but in-person interactions provide a tangible experience that cannot be replicated virtually,” he remarked.
He also commended the National Consumer Action Council (MTPN) Sarawak for supporting the event and ensuring that consumer protection and business ethics remain priorities.
“The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) plays an important role in ensuring transparency in business transactions and consumer protection. It is not about punishing businesses, but rather fostering trust, which is key to a strong consumer-friendly environment,” he added.
Dr Sim reaffirmed the Sarawak government’s commitment to fostering a thriving business ecosystem, particularly for small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
He referenced Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s initiative to acquire Affin Bank, aimed at facilitating easier access to loans for local businesses.
“This acquisition is to ensure that when our SMEs need financial support, they can access it locally without hassle,” he said.
Dr Sim highlighted the rise of cross-border trade and digital commerce, noting that Brunei and Indonesia are increasingly using online platforms for business.
“This event is not just about regional trade, it is about strengthening cross-border collaboration. We want prosperity for all. When we work together, we all grow and succeed,” he said.
“Let’s make Sarawak a model for nation-building, a place where businesses thrive and consumers feel empowered,” he added.
