BAU: The Tasik Biru Suspension Bridge, also known as the Bau Bicentennial Bridge, is now illuminated with lights that brighten the surrounding area.
Transport Deputy Minister, Datuk Henry Harry Jinep, said the bridge replaces the old red concrete bridge that once spanned Tasik Biru, which was demolished due to second-phase mining activities.
“This bridge was built at a cost of RM1 million and was first opened in 2022 in conjunction with Bau’s 200th anniversary celebration.
“However, it was temporarily closed to allow for the town’s upgrading works.
“Now, the bridge has been reopened to the public for free, complete with a lighting system that will be turned on at night during festivals, weekends and festive seasons,” he said at the Bau Bicentennial Bridge lighting event on Thursday night.
He added that the main purpose of the lighting is to liven up the atmosphere at Tasik Biru and enhance its appeal to visitors.
“I am confident this bridge will become a new tourism icon for Bau,” he said.
With captivating lighting and a touch of nostalgia, the Bau Bicentennial Bridge serves not only as a pedestrian walkway but also as a symbolic attraction of Bau town as a prestigious tourism destination.
The 60-metre-long pedestrian bridge was inspired by a tourist bridge in Waihi, New Zealand, and built based on the design concept of a San Francisco-style suspension bridge.
It has now become a new landmark that connects Bau’s historical heritage with its future.
On Thursday, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, officiated at the Pesta Tasik Biru event followed by the launch of the Tasik Biru Resort City in conjunction with Bau’s 205th Anniversary celebration.
