KUCHING: The vibrant Pesta Sungai Simpok, a river festival showcasing the rich traditions of the Bidayuh community with a colourful decorated raft parade, may soon gain official recognition as part of the Sarawak Tourism Calendar.
Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister, Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, held out the possibility at this year’s festival, held along the riverbanks of Kampung Simpok today.
He stated that a proposal would be formally submitted to the Sarawak Ministry of Tourism upon completion of key infrastructure upgrades in the area.
“This festival has long been a cherished annual event for the local community.
“Our immediate priority is enhancing the riverfront infrastructure to ensure it supports both local needs and sustainable tourism,” he said at the Harvest Festival season with Pesta Sungai Kampung Simpok here.

Sagah, who is also Tarat assemblyman, said efforts are already underway, with village committees collaborating with design experts to draft a development proposal that balances modern improvements with ecotourism preservation.
“Any infrastructure must emphasise sustainability, safeguard the natural environment and cultural heritage of the village.
“Our goal is to create a destination that draws both domestic and international visitors.
“We want guests to experience the unspoiled beauty of Simpok, whether through a swim in the river or by simply soaking in the scenery,” he said.
The proposal also includes the introduction of the tagang system, a traditional fish conservation practice, to protect the native river species.
First launched in 2017, Pesta Sungai Simpok, which aims to promote unity and collaboration among villagers, also features craft exhibitions, Bidayuh cultural displays, and local food stalls this year.
He said, if accepted, the festival could soon become a highlight in Sarawak’s tourism lineup, offering a unique blend of indigenous heritage and natural charm.
Meanwhile, AirAsia, which is the official community partner, joined the local community to kick off the Harvest Festival season with Pesta Sungai Kampung Simpok.
AirAsia Malaysia’s Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Captain Fareh Mazputra, said as an airline built by the people, for the people, AirAsia is proud to celebrate this meaningful season of harvest with communities in East Malaysia.
