SARADISE, one of Kuching’s bustling lifestyle hubs, is about to get a whole lot tastier with the grand opening of Big Potato, a fresh and exciting eatery dedicated to crispy curly fries and vibrant slushies.
With an increasing number of eateries in Kuching serving potato-based dishes, what makes Big Potato, a Sarawakian owned store, stand out?
According to its manager Ernest Chin, 21, the answer lies in their commitment to freshness and customisation.
He said that unlike mass-produced fries, Big Potato prides itself on using only fresh, imported potatoes that are cut and prepared in-store daily.
“We also make our own batter, and customers can enjoy different types of seasoning,” he said.
Ranging from the classics, tomato and chilli sauce, customers can also have the option to eat their curly fries with sauces such as sea salt lemon, honey mustard, and green mustard.
“The best part? Our five different flavours of sauces are free for customers to squeeze as much as they want,” he said.

For RM10.50 per box, customers can indulge in these golden, crispy delights, experimenting with flavour combinations to suit their taste buds.
Among the seasoning options are Cheese Onion, Creamy Garlic, Spicy Mala, Salt and Pepper, Snow Cheese, Spicy Cheese, Nacho Cheese, BBQ, Cheese Curry, and Tomyam.
Chin shared that one particular flavour which has already gained popularity is the spicy mala seasoning.
“A lot of people have told me they like the spicy mala one. Even though the name sounds spicy, it’s actually not that overwhelming. Instead, it has a mix of spices that make it really savoury,” he said.
“On the other hand, for those who do not fancy spices’ flavour, they could also try the cheese onion flavour and creamy garlic flavour. These two flavours are also one of our popular picks among the customers,” he said.
Beyond fries, Big Potato also brings a burst of colour to Saradise with its range of six different slushie flavours, priced at RM7.90 per cup.
They have flavours such as Strawberry, Orange, Peach, Apple, Blue Lime, and Grape.
The eye-catching, rainbow-like selection is more than just an aesthetic treat; it represents the diversity and inclusivity that the brand stands for.
“Each slushie flavour has a unique colour, and together, they form a rainbow. The idea is that no matter what background, race, or age, we can all mix together and still look beautiful. I really love this chill and friendly vibe,” he said.

Why Saradise?
Starting a new food business is always a strategic decision, and for Chin, Saradise was the obvious choice.
“Saradise is quite a prime location in Kuching. There are always people visiting, and as a new business, this is a great place to start,” he said.
He views that the lifestyle hub is known for attracting a young and trendy crowd, making it the perfect spot for a brand like Big Potato, which exudes a Gen Z-friendly, stylish, and fun atmosphere.
“From the quirky branding to the vibrant menu, everything about Big Potato is designed to appeal to a generation that values both aesthetics and quality,” he said.
A big vision for the future
Although this is the first Big Potato outlet in Malaysia, Chin has his sights set on much bigger goals.
“We definitely want to expand. Our plan is to franchise and grow across Malaysia. We want to become a big company that shares our values and culture with more people,” he said.
He shared that the dream is not just about selling fries and slushies but it is about creating a community and bringing people together.
“I hope our business grows bigger and bigger, and that we can gain more people who share the same energy and passion. Let’s roll together!”
For those eager to try this exciting new take on curly fries and slushies, Big Potato officially opens its doors today (Mar 1) at Saradise, Kuching, right next to Hokkomiru.
Its opening hours are from noon to 10 pm daily.
