MIRI: Gagasan Anak Dayak Sarawak’s (GADS) Gawai Dayak Bazaar this year is expected to be a bigger affair with more native entrepreneurs coming forward to participate in the event.
The bazaar which made its debut eight years ago will be held from May 1-20 at Permyjaya Miri.
“This year, I was informed that a total 65 canopies with more than 100 stalls would take part in the GADS’ Gawai Bazaar compared to only 45 canopies in the previous year, and some are still on the wait list,” said Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) Dato Gerawat Gala.
He said, the bazaar has not only become a good platform for native entreprenuers to sell their products and generate income but also to strengthen unity among the community and others.
Gerawat was speaking at the pre-launching of the GADS’ Gawai Dayak Bazaar 2023 here on Friday night.
At the event, GADS received an allocation of RM66,000 from elected representatives here.
Sarawakians are lucky to have a state government that gives full support to customs and cultural activities, said Gerawat.
GADS’ chairman David Upe said last year’s bazaar had generated RM1.6million in sales during a 19-day run.
“And this year, we are hoping to surpass last year’s sales,” he said.
Also present at the pre-launching were Miri MP Chiew Choon Man, Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts I Datuk Sebastian Ting and Miri Mayor Adam Yii.
