KUCHING: The Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) has reaffirmed its commitment to champion green mobility as part of its climate response.
Chairman of the BIMP-EAGA Socio-Cultural and Education Cluster, Anielia Siam, asserted that climate change was no longer a distant threat but a present reality.
She said the Green Mobility Innovation Summit served as a turning point in how people, goods and ideas could move sustainably.
“We are at a critical juncture in history. Climate change is no longer a distant threat; it is a reality shaping our daily lives.
“Let us commit to investing in education and training for a green economy, supporting sustainability-driven innovation, building inclusive green mobility systems, and working across borders — because climate change and its challenges know no boundaries.
“As we reflect on the opportunities before us, let us remember that the choices we make today will shape the legacy we leave tomorrow,” she said.
She was speaking during the summit’s opening ceremony, officiated on behalf of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg by Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn today (Sept 8).
Anielia noted that Southeast Asia, including the BIMP-EAGA region, was among the most vulnerable, citing rising sea levels, extreme weather and rapid urbanisation pressures.
She stressed that green mobility was not only an environmental priority but also an economic strategy and moral responsibility requiring inclusive approaches.
“The way we respond today will determine whether mobility becomes a driver of sustainable growth or a burden on future generations.
“It calls for us to embrace renewable energy, invest in clean technologies, design smarter urban systems, and most importantly, think innovatively and inclusively,” she added.
She said partnerships between governments, institutions and communities were crucial in achieving real change and building sustainable, future-ready mobility systems.
“This summit is more than a gathering of minds. It is a milestone of shared responsibility to innovate, reimagine and reshape mobility,” she said.
