KUCHING: Bintulu Port has strong potential to grow into a larger regional gateway if plans to link Sarawak’s logistics network with Kalimantan and Sabah move from the study stage to execution, Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof said.
The Deputy Prime Minister said discussions have focused on optimising Bintulu Port’s operations by connecting it to Kalimantan, which he described as a major logistics route.
“One of the initiatives already taken is a study on rail services to connect not only Sarawak to Sabah, but also from the Kalimantan side, so goods from Kalimantan can be channelled through Bintulu Port,” he said during the 2026 Sarawak Budget Conference at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching yesterday.
He said the study has been conducted to assess Bintulu Port’s potential to serve as a marketing and export gateway for products from the wider region once the connectivity is in place.
“The initiative is backed by the Ministry of Transport, with the study location approved and the study currently ongoing,” he added.
