KUCHING: Preparations for the 6th Special Olympics Malaysia National Games are nearing completion, with Bintulu set to host the national event later this week.

Minister for Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said the Games are expected to run smoothly, with readiness reaching about 90 per cent.

She said the three-day event, scheduled from Apr 24 to 26, will bring together athletes with intellectual disabilities from across the country in a celebration of inclusivity and sporting spirit.

The Games, to be held in Bintulu for the first time, will feature eight sports and involve hundreds of athletes and officials nationwide.

Fatimah said preparations have covered key aspects including logistics, accommodation, transportation, as well as arrangements for the opening and closing ceremonies.

“We are grateful that participation from other states and contingents remains strong despite rising costs, and preparations are progressing well,” she said.

She added that the Games go beyond competition, serving as a platform for empowerment, health programmes and community engagement for persons with intellectual disabilities.

She also noted that all participating athletes will receive medals in recognition of their courage and commitment, reflecting a more inclusive approach to the Games.

In conjunction with the event, health screening initiatives will also be conducted to monitor athletes’ wellbeing and ensure their safety throughout the competition.

She said the hosting of the Games in Sarawak highlights the state’s continued commitment to inclusivity, while also strengthening community awareness and support for persons with disabilities.

The Games are expected to draw participation from multiple states, with strong backing from organisers, volunteers and partners to ensure a meaningful and impactful event.
