BINTULU: The admirable transformation of Bintulu from a river dependent town into a major industrial hub reflects Malaysia’s development over the past 63 years and the progress achieved since the formation of the country.
Bintulu Division Resident Datuk Nyurak Keti said the changes were evident through the development of major industrial areas including Samalaju and Tanjung Kidurong, as well as the expansion of the town.
“If we look back at Bintulu in 1963, the situation was very different.
“But today, we can see such rapid development with the presence of industries in Samalaju, Tanjung Kidurong and the Bintulu town area,” he said.
He stated this when officiating the Mini Exhibition in conjunction with the 2026 Malaysia Day Celebration at the Bintulu Division level on Thursday.
Nyurak reiterated that the development had contributed positively to the socioeconomic wellbeing of the local community through increased employment and economic opportunities.
However, he acknowledged that rapid development had also brought challenges, including rising living costs, rental rates and house prices.
He said Malaysia Day should serve as an opportunity for the public to reflect on the country’s journey since Sept 16, 1963, while appreciating the sacrifices of previous leaders in building a peaceful and multiracial nation.
He stressed that economic and physical development must be accompanied by stronger unity and social inclusion to ensure the benefits of progress could be enjoyed by all communities.
Nyurak also called on residents to demonstrate their patriotism by flying the Jalur Gemilang and Sarawak flag at their homes, premises and buildings.
He opined patriotism should not be confined to Malaysia Day celebrations, but should instead be reflected through everyday efforts to preserve peace, prosperity and national unity.
