Bisegu students urged to pursue holistic success 

KUCHING: Recipients of the inaugural PSBP SPM Excellence Award were urged to pursue holistic development, as academic excellence alone does not guarantee success in life.
 
Officiating at the award presentation ceremony organised by Persatuan Segu Bunuk Penrissen (PSBP) at the Kampung Punau Multipurpose Hall along Jalan Puncak Borneo recently, Puncak Borneo MP Datuk Willie Mongin said students should continue striving for excellence in their studies while developing strong character, good health and spiritual values.
 
Willie, who is also the patron of PSBP, said excellent examination results provide a strong foundation, but they are not the sole determinant of future success.
 
He pointed out that many of the world’s most successful personalities, including Bill Gates, Jack Ma, Elon Musk and Larry Page, did not necessarily attain the highest academic distinctions but succeeded through innovation, vision, perseverance and hard work.
 
“Students should always give their very best and never be satisfied with excellent academic results alone,” he said.
 
Addressing students from the Bisegu community, Willie urged them to pursue balanced development by giving equal attention to their physical and spiritual well-being alongside their academic pursuits.
 
“Success also requires commitment, perseverance, determination and the will to excel in whatever field or endeavour one chooses to pursue,” he said.
 
He added that the ability to recognise and seize opportunities is equally important in shaping one’s future.
 
Nine students from the Bisegu community who obtained at least five As in the 2025 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination were recognised during the event.
 
The recipients were Angelina Rozie Dewong, Christa Rachel Cornelius, Daniel Doel Dobat, Kathy Parisi, Loiez Hamelton Domingo, Naidalynn Eva Zukronai, Ruth Abigail Buglie, Valerie Clarissa Franky and Zendrea Contessa Kho.
 
Willie presented certificates of excellence and cash incentives to the award recipients.
 
He also commended PSBP for introducing the excellence award programme, describing it as a meaningful initiative to recognise academic achievement while motivating more young people in the Bisegu community to pursue educational excellence.
 
He pledged his continued support, including financial assistance, for education-related programmes organised by the association in the future.
 
The awards marked the first time PSBP had organised such a recognition programme since the association was established eight years ago.
 
Earlier, PSBP chairman said the association introduced the awards to acknowledge the hard work and achievements of outstanding students despite its limited financial resources.
 
He said the cash incentives might not be as substantial as those offered by larger organisations, but they reflected the association’s sincere commitment to inspiring more Bisegu children to excel academically.
 
He expressed hope that the programme would become an annual initiative and continue for as long as PSBP remains active.
 
Looking ahead, he said the association plans to expand the award, subject to its financial capability, by introducing additional categories for students pursuing the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM), diploma and bachelor’s degree programmes.
 
He also welcomed contributions from individuals, companies and organisations to help sustain and further develop the educational initiative for future generations.
 
Meanwhile, the event also witnessed the presentation of certificates of appreciation to former PSBP executive committee members in recognition of their dedication and contributions during their tenure.
 
The recipients were founding chairman Lister Nonem Moteng, secretary Henry Senok, treasurer Robert Oren, assistant treasurer Melvin Francis Abu, information and publicity chief John Rizal Biki, executive committee members Jackie PanyoJub, Victhor Leo Bobin and James Henry Kusei, as well as auditors Cynthia Bangan and Winnie Jakai.
 
Certificates of appointment were also presented to the village chiefs of the six Bisegu villages, namely Cassidy Teka (Kampung Segu Bunuk), Durit Moting (Kampung Sumur Bunuk), Midah Jub (Kampung Sorot Bunuk), Donald Adil Singeng (Kampung Sebatuh Bunuk), Jafar Rabor (Kampung Bratan) and Punet Siet (Kampung Panau), who were appointed as advisors to PSBP.
 
The ceremony also saw certificates presented to the newly elected PSBP office bearers for the 2026–2028 term, led by chairman Gabriel Michael Tomi and deputy chairman Eric Niru Bina.
 
The new leadership team also comprises Aden Nagrace as secretary, Rodney Mora (assistant secretary), Wisco Gen (treasurer), and executive committee members Nami Arieng, Protonia Mariko Rabe, Christina Mathew Pue, Metua Kure, Chaplin Wan, Gibson Sateh and Suzera David Carol.
