TANJUNG MANIS: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) here carried out a swift medical evacuation (Medevac) to rescue a fisherman who sustained a leg injury after being hit by a tugboat in Belawai waters last Monday.

MMEA Tanjung Manis director Commander Gilbert Tinggak Numpang said the incident came to light after the Kuching Maritime Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) received a distress call from a Sarawak Marine Fisheries Department officer about a crew member aboard a Class C fishing vessel who was bleeding heavily from his right leg.

Acting on information, the MRSC informed the MMEA Tanjung Manis and a rescue team was immediately deployed to the jetty to perform the Medevac.

The 37-year-old victim was in a weakened state when the team arrived. He was carefully transferred from the fishing vessel onto their patrol boat for immediate medical assistance.

Gilbert stated that the victim was later rushed to Tanjung Manis health clinic for further treatment.

He urged the public to report any maritime emergencies or complaints by contacting the MMEA Tanjung Manis operations centre at 011-35727765 or the emergency line 999.
