SIBU: Over 45,707 pints of blood were collected by the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Sarawak Chapter as of last year, thanks to the contributions of regular donors and those who participated in mobile donation drives.
Announcing this, its chairman, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan stated that this is an outstanding achievement, adding however that the need for blood is constant.
“We need to increase our donation efforts to ensure that we have a steady supply for the growing medical needs of our people,” he said at the MRCS Sibu branch’s celebration of World Blood Donor Day 2025 here Sunday (July 6).
“We aim to collect more pints this year, and I am confident that with the continued support of our community, we can meet and surpass that goal.”
Dr Chan said he is deeply moved by the incredible efforts and contributions made by the blood donors, volunteers and supporters across the state.

He stressed that their generosity not only strengthens the community but also serves as an inspiration to others around the world.
Blood donation, according to him, is one of the most selfless acts a person can perform, yet it is often taken for granted.
It is easy, he said, to forget that every day, in hospitals and clinics across Sarawak, lives depend on the availability of safe blood.
Whether it is for an emergency surgery, cancer treatment, maternal care or accidents, the need for blood is constant and vital, he said, adding, each drop of blood donated is a beacon of hope for someone in need, and it is an act of compassion that echoes the very best of what it means to be human.
Taking the opportunity to recognise the hard work and tireless dedication of the MRCS Sibu branch, he pointed out that its staff and volunteers have been an integral part of ensuring the success of the blood donation campaigns.
“Additionally, none of this would be possible without the partnerships we have formed with local organisations, schools, hospitals, and businesses. A heartfelt thank you goes out to all our partners — your support, collaboration, and belief in our mission make all the difference.
“Whether it’s providing venues for blood drives, helping to raise awareness, or offering logistical support, each contribution plays a vital role in ensuring the success of our campaigns.
“As chairman, it is also my responsibility to highlight the importance of continuous blood donations. Blood cannot be stored indefinitely, and the need for donors is constant. World Blood Donor Day serves not only as a celebration but also as a reminder for all of us to step forward and continue the cycle of giving,” he explained.
Dr Chan also called on the younger generations to step up and be part of this movement.
“Your participation will help us sustain a safe and reliable blood supply, and it will ensure that our healthcare system remains resilient in times of need.
“This year’s theme—”Give blood, Give hope: Together we save lives” – reminds us of the continuous nature of blood donation.”
He also took the opportunity to call on local businesses, schools, and communities to join MRCS in this noble cause.
Together, he said, they could create a culture of blood donation in Sarawak, where giving blood is as common as any other act of community service.
If every one commits to donating blood even once or twice a year, he said it would ensure a consistent and safe blood supply for the hospitals and medical centres.
