KUCHING: Blood donors were hailed as the true heroes behind the survival of an 18-year-old accident victim who lost nearly twice the total amount of blood in his body.
The Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) Blood Bank said the patient suffered massive bleeding following a road accident last week, losing an estimated 10 litres of blood.
A laparotomy was immediately performed to stop the continuous internal bleeding.
During the surgery, doctors administered 20 units of red blood cells, 16 units of fresh frozen plasma, 14 units of cryoprecipitate and 10 units of platelets. The patient’s blood type was O positive.
“Anaesthetists and surgeons fought relentlessly in the operating theatre, while blood bank staff worked around the clock to supply enough blood on time.
“Behind the frontline are the donors whose role often goes unnoticed. Without their selfless contributions, this young patient would not have survived,” the Blood Bank said in a statement.
It added that the case was a clear reminder of how vital regular blood donations are in ensuring hospitals have lifesaving supplies in emergencies.
“Thank you to all donors. You are the real heroes behind the scenes,” the statement read.
