TANJUNG MANIS: The Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC), in collaboration with Worldview Climate Solutions (WCS), has stepped up efforts to strengthen community awareness of the Sarawak Blue Carbon Initiative (SBCI) through dialogues with villagers in Kampung Stalon and Kampung Sebayang.

Over 60 villagers participated in the sessions, which focused on mangrove restoration, climate resilience and how blue carbon ecosystems can benefit local communities.

STIDC Project Planning and Development Manager, Ts. Mohd Irhasman Inggal, highlighted that blue carbon plays a crucial role in addressing climate change.

“Blue carbon ecosystems not only absorb carbon dioxide but also preserve biodiversity, protect coastlines from erosion and foster opportunities for eco-tourism, employment, and community growth,” he said.

Covering about 8,126 hectares in Tanjung Manis, the SBCI is a key part of Sarawak’s green development agenda aimed at strengthening climate resilience, environmental sustainability and community empowerment.

The dialogues, according to STIDC, reaffirmed the commitment of the corporation and WCS to implementing solutions that balance biodiversity conservation with community livelihoods.

Participants expressed strong support and determination to work together towards a greener Sarawak, following knowledge-sharing sessions that underscored the ecological and social significance of blue carbon.
