SEMATAN: The iconic 40-horsepower boat race returns to thrill spectators as part of the Sematan Festival 2025, set to take place from July 25 to 27.
Tanjung Datu assemblyman Azizul Annuar Adenan said the boat race remains the highlight of the festival, attracting both experienced racers and coastal enthusiasts from across Sarawak.
“This is the event everyone looks forward to. It is Pesta Sematan’s signature event.
We’re expecting around 10 to 20 teams in the 30 to 40 horsepower category.
“In Kapit recently, they went as high as 80 horsepower — that’s a bit much for us. We’re sticking to 40 and below,” he told reporters at a press conference yesterday.
The festival, which alternates every two years with Regata Batang Kayan or Pesta Lundu, continues to grow in both scale and reputation.
