KUCHING: Sarawak’s boccia squad has stepped up preparations with a month-long centralised training camp ahead of the Malaysia Para Games (Para SUKMA), with the team now focused on fine-tuning its gameplay.
Sarawak Boccia Association’s President, Vencent Teri, said the nine-member squad had been undergoing centralised training locally as it enters the final phase of preparations for the Games.
“So far, everything is going well. We just want to further refine our gameplay,” he told Sarawak Tribune.
Vencent said the squad was targeting two gold, two silver and one bronze medal at the Para SUKMA, despite having fewer medal opportunities this time around.
He explained that Sarawak would not be represented in the men’s and women’s BC4 as well as the women’s BC2 categories.
“There are no team or pairs events this time, so all the events are individual. Because the team and pairs events are not being contested, we have slightly fewer medals to compete for,” he said.
Nevertheless, Vencent said the squad remained confident of achieving its target of five medals.
The team’s preparations have included training sessions at Boulevard Shopping Mall, with the athletes working on their gameplay and strategies ahead of the competition.
Meanwhile, one of Sarawak’s boccia athletes is currently gaining valuable international exposure at the Seoul 2026 World Boccia Championships in South Korea.
Vencent said the athlete would return from Seoul directly to join the Sarawak contingent for the Para SUKMA.
“He will return from Seoul directly to the Para SUKMA,” he said.
The international experience, he added, would provide valuable exposure for the athlete ahead of the Games.
The Para SUKMA 2026 will be held in Selangor from September 5 to 10.
