LUNDU: The body of an elderly man who fell into Batang Kayan near Kampung Sileng, has been recovered yesterday (June 10), a day after he went missing while out fishing alone.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the victim, identified as 74-year-old Awang Bosman Awang Jibi, was discovered floating in the river at around 12.30 pm.

His body was recovered within 1km radius from where his boat was last seen and later handed over to the police for further action.

Following the discovery, the search and rescue (SAR) operation was officially called off at 1.10 pm.

Awang Bosman was last seen on Monday (June 9) when he went out to fish alone. His disappearance was discovered when villagers saw his boat circling and drifting toward the riverbank with no one on board.

Suspecting he had fallen into the river, his family lodged a report at the Lundu district police headquarters (IPD) to request assistance.

Firefighters from Lundu station along with the police and the Civil Defence Force (APM) were deployed to the scene after being alerted.
