KUCHING: The body of an elderly woman, believed to be in her 70s, was discovered floating beneath the Floating Mosque here before being recovered near the Pangkalan Panjang jetty at the Kuching Waterfront this morning.
District Police Chief, ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, said police received a distress call at 10:45 am from a member of the public who reported sighting a body.
“Police arrived at the scene and confirmed the presence of a body. The body had drifted to the jetty at Pangkalan Panjang near the Kuching Waterfront,” he said in a statement today.
He added that paramedics from Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) later pronounced the woman had passed away at the scene.
Alexson said the deceased is believed to be a local woman and at the time of discovery, she was fully dressed in a long-sleeved blue shirt, long blue trousers, and a light red inner ‘hijab’.
“However, no identification documents were found during the examination,” he said.
The case has been classified as sudden death.
Police are urging the public not to speculate on the incident out of respect for the deceased’s family.
