KANOWIT: A local man, who was feared drowned after falling off a barge in Rajang River on Wednesday, was found afloat in the river this morning.

Handout photo shows rescuers at the scene to recover the victim’s body from the Rajang River.

The victim, identified as Jamie Adong, 54, was discovered by members of the public at 8:57 am, about five kilometres from the search and rescue (SAR) control post.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the victim, who worked on the barge, was found shirtless, clad only in underwear with a tattoo on his right arm.

Rescuers retrieved the body and brought it to the Kanowit town jetty, where it was positively identified by the victim’s family.

The body was later handed over to the police for further action.

Following the discovery, the SAR operation was officially called off at 10:30 am.

The incident reportedly occurred when the victim, believed to have been relieving himself at the edge of the barge that was being towed by a tugboat, fell into the river about two kilometres from Kanowit town.
