KUCHING: Bodybuilding in Sarawak takes a cultural twist as the sport is used to showcase heritage, unite communities, and draw global attention through a unique blend of tradition and athleticism.
Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Deputy Minister, Datuk Snowdan Lawan, said Mr Keling Borneo International Championship 2025 aims to promote Sarawak’s culture through bodybuilding while attracting both local and international tourists to witness this fusion of sport and tradition.
He added that the event, to be held on May 17, also helps foster unity among Sarawak’s diverse cultural communities.
“It provides local athletes with the opportunity to showcase their cultural heritage on an international stage.
“Our athletes wear traditional attire, Bidayuh wear Bidayuh costumes, Iban wear Iban outfits, Orang Ulu wear theirs. It’s up to them,” he said.
Snowdan made these remarks during a press conference on Mr Keling Borneo International Championship 2025, held at Baitulmakmur II today.
He further stated that the event helps build a positive global identity for the people of Sarawak, especially its indigenous communities.
“It also holds great potential for Sarawak, including the preservation of cultural heritage for future generations.
“It encourages human capital development by involving youth in various fields and attracts greater investment in the tourism, sports and cultural sectors,” he said.
Snowdan also shared that the competition, which offers RM54,800 in prize money, is expected to welcome around 100 athletes.
They will feature in several categories, including men’s sports physique, men’s athletic physique, bodybuilding (under 70 kg), bodybuilding (70-85 kg), and bodybuilding (above 85 kg).
