KUCHING: The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) is ramping up its preparedness for the upcoming festive season through Ops Raya.
The operation is a state-wide operation focused on ensuring safety on the roads, in commercial areas, and at residential neighbourhoods.
According to Bomba Director, Jamri Masran, 80 per cent of firefighters will be on duty throughout the Hari Raya celebration to respond swiftly to emergencies.
“Like in previous years, we ensure that 80 per cent of our team remains available during the season, especially in key locations.
“Senior officers will also visit stations to support personnel who cannot take time off,” he told reporters after the Ziarah Sumbangsih Raya 2025 event at the Bomba Headquarters yesterday.
With the Pan Borneo Highway expected to see heavy traffic as people return to their hometowns, Jamri said Bomba is preparing for potential road accidents and emergencies.
“We anticipate an increase in vehicle movement along the highway, and our teams will be ready for any incident,” he said.
Beyond road safety, Ops Raya will also focus on fire prevention in commercial buildings, shopping malls and public areas.
Fire safety inspections will be conducted to ensure emergency exits remain clear and premises comply with regulations.
Jamri also urged caution when celebrating with fireworks and firecrackers, particularly in villages.
“Parents should monitor their children while playing with fireworks.
“We cannot completely ban these activities, but we advise caution to prevent accidents,” he said.
Bomba will remain on standby throughout the festive period, conducting nightly patrols in villages.
“Our fire stations will always be on standby, and we will patrol villages at night if there is a significant increase in firecracker-related activities,” Jamri added.
Ops Raya, at the national level, typically begins a week before Hari Raya and continues for a week after.
In Sarawak, however, the official launch is expected to be around March 25 or 26.
