SIBURAN: With Chinese New Year approaching, fire engines rolled out of Eastern Mall here as the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) launched its festive season fire safety campaign recently.

The campaign, officiated by Bomba Sarawak Zone 2 chief, PgKB II Gawai John, served as a reminder for the public to remain cautious during the celebration period, when fire risks typically increase.

Bomba said festive cooking, decorative lighting, candles and joss sticks, as well as the use of firecrackers and fireworks, are among the common causes of fires during this period.

The department also warned against overloading electrical appliances and leaving kitchen activities unattended.

As part of the programme, a symbolic flag-off of fire engines marked the start of Chinese New Year festive patrols across Zone 2 areas.

Visitors at the mall were treated to a lion dance performance, while fire officers from the Siburan station conducted demonstrations on kitchen fire suppression and the proper use of fire extinguishers.

Fire safety campaign materials were also distributed to raise awareness among shoppers and tenants.

The programme involved officers and personnel from Sarawak Zone 2 office and Siburan station, with participation from Eastern Mall Siburan staff and members of the public.

Eastern Mall’s manager, Dayang Norazreen Abang Abdul Malek, was also present.
