BINTULU: Eight Special Response Teams have been deployed by the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) in anticipation of flood operations during the Northeast Monsoon.

Its director Jamri Masran said that preparations had been underway since September, with the official launch on Nov 17.

“These eight teams were established specifically for the monsoon and are equipped with boats, lorries and rescue tools suitable for flood operations,” he said after the Sarawak Bomba Run 3.0 programme at the Bintulu Civic Centre grounds on Sunday (Nov 30).

He said its preparedness level has been further strengthened with the establishment of three Regional Forward Bases (RFB) in Kuching, Bintulu and Miri to store logistics and enable faster deployment of assets to affected areas.

Jamri added that nearly 250 Volunteer Firefighting Teams statewide would also assist in evacuation and rescue operations.

“In addition, 17 boats have been handed over to 17 communities in flood-prone areas.

“These community teams will act as the first responders before the arrival of Bomba personnel,” he said.

Commenting on the distribution of boats, he said that the initiative involved communities across Sarawak and was not limited to Bintulu.

“The distribution last week covered Kuching and Samarahan Zone first due to distance factors.

“Every zone, including Bintulu, has its own community teams, although I am not certain of the exact number,” he explained.

On logistics, Jamri said Bintulu has its own assets, while assets from other agencies such as the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) will be integrated during operations to enhance response effectiveness.

Meanwhile, Bomba has also adjusted its staffing schedule in preparation for potential floods.

“As usual, firefighters at involved stations will shift from a 12-hour to a 24-hour rotation.

“Leave will also be frozen in the event of a disaster, although some flexibility will be given to personnel celebrating Christmas,” he said.
