SIBU: Quick response from firefighters helped prevent a double storey semi-detached house at Jalan Hua Kiew from being completely destroyed by fire this morning.

Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Zone 4 chief, Andy Alie, said no injuries or casualties were reported in the 6.45 am incident, as all 20 occupants managed to evacuate to safety.

Firefighters from Sibu central and Sungai Merah stations were dispatched to the location following a distress call.

They arrived at the scene to find the house partially ablaze.

“Upon arrival, they found the house on fire and quickly doused the flames using water sourced from a nearby fire hydrant.

“The fire was brought under control at 6.58 am and it only caused 30 per cent damage to the house,” he said.

Firefighters then conducted overhaul works to eliminate any risk of reignition.

Once the situation was deemed safe, the team wrapped up the operation at 8.05 am.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
