KUCHING: National para powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin was named the National Paralympic Sportsman of the Year at the 2024 National Sports Awards (ASN).
Bonnie, 25, who hails from Serian, triumphed over a field of strong contenders, including fellow para athletes Muhammad Ziyad Zolkefli and Datuk Abdul Latif Romly (para athletics), Eddy Bernard (para athletics), and Cheah Liek Hou (para badminton).
His win was celebrated alongside other Sarawakians who were also honoured at the prestigious ceremony.
Other Sarawakian award recipients included Sunny Si Poh Heng, who received the Sports Leadership Award, and Jamil Adam, who was named Best National Male Coach.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian congratulated the recipients, praising their dedication and achievements.
“Heartiest congratulations to Sarawakians who won their accolades at the 2024 National Sports Awards ceremony,” he said in his Facebook page.
All main category winners received a trophy, certificate, souvenir trophy, and RM20,000 in cash.
The ASN also featured seven other award categories, including Best Team, Best Coach, Sports Personality, and a Special Award.
The prestigious awards ceremony took place at Hotel Dorsett Grand, Subang Jaya on Tuesday (May 13) and was graced by His Majesty Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim.
Also present at the event was Minister of Youth and Sports Hannah Yeoh.
