KUCHING: National para powerlifting ace, Bonnie Bunyau Gustin, has once again etched his name among the nation’s greats after being crowned World Champion in the Men’s Up to 72kg category at the 2025 World Para Powerlifting Championships, held in Cairo, Egypt on Monday (Oct 13).

The 26-year-old Sarawakian delivered a commanding performance in the World meet, lifting his way to two gold medals, one in the best lift with an impressive 230kg, and another in the total lift with a combined 672kg.

Bonnie outclassed a field of 33 athletes, with Pingkang of China (222kg) taking silver and Mark Swan of Great Britain (217kg) earning bronze in the best lift category. In the total lift, Amir of Iran finished second with 581kg, while Swan claimed third with 427kg.

This victory marks Bonnie’s fourth consecutive world title, following his previous triumphs in Nur-Sultan (2019), Tbilisi (2021), and Dubai (2023).

Although just shy of his personal best of 232kg set in 2024, the Sarawakian’s consistency and strength once again underlined his status as one of the world’s finest para powerlifters.
