MIRI: A celebration of Sarawak’s rich cultural heritage took place on Friday evening as the Sarawak Chinese Association (Miri) hosted the pre-launch of the book ‘Discovering Sarawak Ethnic Craft’.
The event, which also marked the installation of the new committee for the association, featured a keynote address by Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring), Datuk Gerawat Gala.
The book aims to showcase the unique ethnic crafts and traditions that flourish in Sarawak’s diverse communities.
It highlights the intricate artistry and cultural significance behind various crafts from different ethnic groups, including Malays, Ibans, Bidayuhs, Melanaus, Chinese and Orang Ulu.
In his address, Gerawat emphasised the importance of the book as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of Sarawak’s multifaceted cultures.
“This publication serves not only as a celebration of our artistic heritage but also as a reminder of the unity that defines us as Sarawakians,” he stated.
He highlighted that the diversity inherent in Sarawak is a source of strength, calling for continued mutual respect and understanding among the state’s myriad ethnicities.
Gerawat also noted that the book’s launch coincides with Sarawak’s tradition of celebrating various festivals, where communities come together, irrespective of their backgrounds.
“From Gawai and Hari Raya to Chinese New Year and Christmas, we reaffirm our commitment to living as one large family.
“The crafts featured in this book embody our shared stories and collective spirit,” he added.
Gerawat was representing Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who could not attend the event.
He encouraged the crowd to preserve the harmony that has been cultivated over the years in Sarawak, advising against external provocations that may disrupt this unity.
