BELAWAI: The launch of ‘Songket Tenunan Masyarakat Rajang’ by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) marks a significant boost to Sarawak’s rich traditional textile heritage.
Tanjong Manis Member of Parliament, Datuk Yusuf Abdul Wahab, described the book, authored by Radzemah Bolhassan and Saanah Suhaili, as an important reference that documented the culture and intricate weaving artistry of the Rajang community.
“This publication is not merely an academic work, but a heritage document that captures the identity of the Rajang people through weaving arts passed down from generation to generation,” he said during the book launch on Saturday night.
He said that the programme played a major role in uplifting local heritage and enhancing public understanding of the artistic value of songket as a cultural identity and asset.
“Songket Rajang is not just a handicraft product but a symbol of identity that must be preserved through research, exhibitions and youth involvement,” he added.
Yusuf also said the Rajang Weaving House had the potential to become a major reference centre for traditional weaving arts while Iftitah Beach Resort had the potential to grow into an attractive cultural tourism destination in the Tanjung Manis area.
