KUCHING: The search has begun for Sarawak’s next Digital Champion with participants from 45 districts across the state arriving in the capital to commence a five-day leadership and innovation bootcamp.

Following the bootcamp, they will implement community-based digital outreach programmes in their respective districts, after which a final evaluation will select the best among them to be crowned Sarawak Digital Champion.

The Sarawak Digital Champion (SDC) Bootcamp, organised by the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) in collaboration with community partner AZAM Sarawak, runs from Feb 22 to Feb 26.

The bootcamp gathers selected participants for structured digital training, mentorship sessions, and innovation development aimed at strengthening practical skills and digital leadership capabilities.

They will serve as Digital Champions in their districts, leading mentoring, coaching and knowledge-sharing sessions to enhance digital awareness and literacy within local communities upon completion.

The Sarawak Digital Champion programme, themed ‘Innovate Digitally, Empower Communities’, seeks to strengthen digital literacy and innovation capacity statewide, while encouraging broader participation in the digital economy.

Through the implementation of the Kamek Digital Workshop series in respective districts, the initiative is expected to benefit at least 2,700 entrepreneurs across Sarawak.

As community coordinating partner, AZAM Sarawak plays a key role in ensuring the structured and impactful implementation of the programme at the grassroots level.

Drawing on its extensive experience in community development and participatory communication, AZAM is helping to strengthen district networks and prepare participants to lead inclusive digital transformation efforts.

AZAM Sarawak Community Development Manager, Yaana Singkie, said the programme adopts a community-based approach in developing digital leadership.

“This bootcamp is not merely technical training. It is a process of building digital leaders in every district.

“With Digital Champions in place, we are forming a network of digital ambassadors who will return to their communities to share knowledge, mentor local entrepreneurs and strengthen public confidence in the use of digital technology,” she said.

She added that participation from across Sarawak reflects a collective commitment to ensuring digital transformation extends beyond urban centres and reaches rural areas inclusively.

“As a coordinating partner, AZAM views this programme as a strategic platform to empower communities through impactful communication and training.

“When digital skills are delivered close to the people, it not only improves literacy but also opens up more sustainable economic opportunities,” she added.
