KUCHING: With global uncertainties influencing sporting calendars, the Borneo 100 Triathlon 2026 is poised to attract more international participants as Sarawak positions itself as an emerging race destination.

Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said the early response to the inaugural event has been encouraging, with more than 20 per cent of participants already comprising international athletes.

He noted that the triathlon, scheduled for June 21, has drawn registrations not only from across Malaysia, but also from countries including Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, China, Russia and Italy.

“There are many triathletes from West Malaysia. They might cancel their participation in other events because of the hike (in oil prices) and flight fares, and come down to Kuching, hopefully,” he said.

Abdul Karim said organisers are hopeful of attracting even more participants from the region, particularly from Singapore, Indonesia and West Malaysia, where the sport has a larger following.

“Triathlon is not for everyone. Some may be strong in cycling but cannot swim, while others can run but not cycle. To compete, athletes must be able to do all three disciplines,” he said during a press conference at Baitulmakmur Building II here today.

Despite the demanding nature of the sport, he said the strong early turnout reflects growing interest and confidence in the event.

With a target of at least 20 per cent international participation, Abdul Karim believes the Borneo 100 has the potential to develop into a recognised international triathlon brand.

“As this is the inaugural edition, it is very important that it is successful and well-received by both local and foreign participants. These organisers are good and can come again next year,” he added.

He stressed that ensuring a smooth and well-organised event is crucial, with no room for major setbacks or incidents that could affect its reputation.

Beyond the competition, the event is also expected to bring economic benefits to local communities, particularly in Sematan and the surrounding villages, as participants and visitors travel in for the race.

The Borneo 100 Triathlon 2026 offers categories for different experience levels.

The Sprint Individual features a 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run, while the Olympic Distance Individual includes a 1.5km swim, 40km bike and 10km run.

There is also an Olympic Distance Relay for teams of three, with each completing one segment.

The B100 Triathlon Individual covers a 1.5km swim, 80km bike and 18.5km run. The Standard Aquathlon Individual consists of a 1.5km swim and 10km run, without cycling.
