KUCHING: Sarawak is set to take centre stage in regional cricket as it welcomes 120 elite women cricketers for the Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD) Malaysia Women’s Series this September.

In a statement by Sarawak Cricket Association (SCA) issued recently, Malaysia Cricket Association (MCA) president Mahinda Vallipuram confirmed the host job during a courtesy call on Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah on Wednesday (Jul 2).

He said the upcoming YSD Malaysia Women’s Series will be held in Kuching this September, bringing together 120 elite women cricketers from across the region to compete in, here at the Borneo Cricket Ground, Petra Jaya.

Mahinda further encouraged the implementation of the YSD ADIWIRA Cricket Programme in Sarawak — a grassroots initiative already widely adopted in Malaya to introduce cricket in schools and communities.

He said both initiatives are supported by Yayasan Sime Darby.

SCA secretary general Gordon Chung Pei Nan, meanwhile, same statement said these are significant steps in both shaping the future and honouring the past of cricket in Sarawak.

The Sarawak Cricket Association looks forward to working closely with the state government, MCA, and other stakeholders to drive the sport forward in East Malaysia.
