KUCHING: Events such as Borneo Fittest are helping position Sarawak as a growing sports tourism destination while promoting healthier lifestyles and stronger community participation.

Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) Chairman, Councillor Tan Kai, representing Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, said sporting events create value beyond competition by attracting athletes, supporters and visitors to experience Sarawak’s hospitality, culture and local attractions.

“Borneo Fittest 2026 demonstrates how sporting events create value far beyond the competition floor.

“They encourage healthier lifestyles, strengthen community participation and, at the same time, contribute to Sarawak’s growing sports tourism industry by attracting athletes, supporters and visitors who experience our hospitality, culture and local attractions,” he said.

The sixth edition of Borneo Fittest, which ran from August 1 to 2, was organised by the Sarawak Fitness Association (SFA) and concluded after two days of competition featuring three categories: PLAY, PUSH and PRIME, catering to participants of varying fitness levels.

Dr Sim also noted that the event reflects Sarawak’s commitment to building an active and inclusive sporting culture while strengthening the state’s position as a preferred destination for regional sporting events.

SFA’s President, Carter Wei, said this year’s edition continued to attract strong participation from athletes and fitness enthusiasts across the region, reflecting the growing popularity of functional fitness in Borneo.

“SFA remains committed to raising competition standards while creating greater opportunities for athletes to compete, connect and inspire one another through the sport,” he said.

The overall champions were crowned across the PLAY, PUSH and PRIME divisions following two days of competition, with athletes showcasing strength, endurance and teamwork throughout the event.

Looking ahead, Amir said SFA hopes to further expand Borneo Fittest in future editions as part of efforts to establish Sarawak as a regional hub for functional fitness competitions.
