KUCHING: Borneo Fittest 2026 will mark its sixth edition this year, with organisers looking to build on its growing role in developing Sarawak’s functional fitness community.
Sarawak Fitness Association President Carter Wei said Borneo Fittest has evolved significantly since its inception, mirroring the rapid growth of functional fitness in the state.
“Borneo Fittest has never just been about finding the fittest athletes. It’s about building a stronger fitness community in Sarawak.
“When we first started, functional fitness was still relatively new here. Today we have more gyms, qualified coaches and athletes competing at the national and international levels. That’s something we’re very proud of,” he told Sarawak Tribune.

This year’s edition is expected to feature around 120 athletes representing approximately 40 teams from Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore and Indonesia.
The competition will be held at Ang Cheng Ho Sports and Community Hall in Kuching from August 1 to 2.
Over the years, the competition has attracted participants from all walks of life, including students, working professionals, parents and masters athletes, reflecting the growing appeal of functional fitness in Sarawak.
“We now see people from all walks of life training together, competing together and inspiring one another.
“Events like Borneo Fittest have helped bring these communities together through healthy competition and shared experiences.
“This year’s team format will also challenge athletes in communication, strategy and teamwork, which are just as important as strength and endurance in functional fitness,” he added.
Spectators can expect a mix of heavy lifting, gymnastics, sprint events and endurance challenges throughout the two-day competition.
“If young athletes are inspired to start training, local gyms continue working together, and more visitors travel to Sarawak because of events like this, then we’ve achieved something much bigger than a weekend competition,” he said.
