Over 1,000 athletes are set to compete in the revived Borneo Games 2025.

The Games is set to feature both mainstream sports such as athletics, swimming, lawn bowls, archery, and badminton, as well as traditional events like blowpipe and Tug-of-War.

Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said these games are aimed at celebrating Borneo’s diverse heritage while fostering deeper connections among native people.

“The Borneo Games, with roots tracing back to 1954, are set to return on Sept 24 to 28 after the last edition in 2013 hosted by the Federal Territory of Labuan.

“The revival is championed by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg where his vision for the Games transcends sport, aims to unite the Bornean people through shared values, foster peace and prosperity, enhance cross-border relationships as well as empower youth to lead with cultural pride and confidence,” he said.

He said this in his ministerial winding-up speech during the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here today (May 27).

Abdul Karim said the initiative is also in line with Sarawak’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which recognises sports as a catalyst for economic growth, well-being, tourism and regional diplomacy.

“Tasked with leading this effort, My Ministry together with the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) will ensure the Games serve as a vibrant platform for both athletic excellence and cultural celebration,” he said.
