KUCHING: The Borneo Games is more than just a sporting event as it holds immense potential as a platform to further strengthen the warm ties between Sarawak and Brunei, particularly among the youth of both regions.

This was highlighted during an official meeting between Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Brunei Darussalam’s Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Datuk Seri Setia Awang Nazmi Awang Mohamad at Wisma Sumber Alam here.

Awang Tengah said the revival of Borneo Games not only would enhance sporting excellence but also deepen bilateral relations.

“Our relations are already close, not just at the government level, but also among the people, many of whom share family ties,” he said when met by reporters after the meeting on Tuesday.

During the meeting, he also proposed utilising strategic locations such as the iconic bridge linking Brunei Muara and Temburong as a venue for running events like the Borneo Marathon, potentially turning it into a major sports tourism draw in the region.

“It would be exciting to hold such an event there. Not only would it promote a healthy lifestyle, but it could also attract participants from across the region,” he added.

Meanwhile, Awang Nazmi expressed Brunei’s full support for the revival of the Borneo Games, describing it as a meaningful investment in youth development and regional ties.

“We fully support Sarawak’s initiative to revive the Borneo Games. It is a positive step that can lead to more collaborative efforts, including in areas such as the economy and social development,” he said.

He stressed that the close relationship between Sarawak and Brunei is underpinned not only by formal diplomacy but also shared history and familial bonds.

He added that joint initiatives like the Borneo Games reflect a strong commitment from both parties to build on their shared heritage and expand cooperation in sports, youth development, tourism, and diplomatic relations..
