Borneo Green Bike Tour adds vroom towards sustainability

KUCHING: The Borneo Green Bike Tour, which involves the use of electric motorcycles and bikes, has taken a significant step in promoting sustainable tourism and driving the industry toward green energy.

Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said the event, initiated by Smart Leisure & Travels Sdn Bhd, aims to promote the use of electric motorcycles and bikes, allowing tourists to explore the rich culture, history, and beauty of Kuching in an environmentally friendly way.

“Smart Leisure & Travel is promoting the use of electric motorcycles in both the tourism industry and everyday life.

“This is an effort we truly applaud to ensure =our environment remains clean,” he said.

Abdul Karim, alongside Sarawak Tourism Board CEO Sharzede Salleh Askor, joined the tour to show support and raise awareness about the initiative.

The launch, held at the Brooke Monument, Kuching Waterfront on Saturday (Feb 8), marks a significant milestone in Sarawak’s ongoing commitment to eco-friendly travel and preserving its natural heritage.

“We do not want to see pollution, these are things that we are trying to create in our society.

“So that the people, will always have an awareness about the importance of protecting the environment,” he said.

Tour highlights include the Old Court House, Kai Joo Lane, Darul Hana Bridge, Cat Statue, Carpenter Street, Sarawak Museum, and the Borneo Cultures Museum – all culturally significant spots that offer deeper insight into Sarawak’s vibrant history.

“Today is our small effort to show that we should promote the transition to electric, green energy, hydrogen, and gradually move away from fossil fuels,” he said.

While other countries have made significant strides in electric vehicles and hydrogen-powered technologies, Abdul Karim who is also Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development noted that Sarawak is still in its pioneering stage but is moving forward.

“We are still at our pioneering (stage) but there must be a place (and) stage where we start and it is good to start it this way,” he said.

Also present at the event was Datuk Hilmy Othman, Mayor of Kuching North City Hall (DBKU).
