KOTA SAMARAHAN: Borneo Hackwknd 2026 has proven that young innovators across Asia are capable of using artificial intelligence (AI) not just for technological advancement, but also to address real social challenges affecting communities.

Associate Professor Dr Jane Labadin of the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), said the hackathon reflected the creativity, dedication, and commitment of the younger generation in developing solutions with meaningful social impact.

She said this year’s theme, “The Role of AI in ASEAN Social Impact”, was especially relevant as countries across the region continue to face issues involving education, equality, and sustainability.

“What is truly inspiring is how each of you has approached AI not simply as a technological trend, but as a tool to create real and lasting impact for communities,” she said during the closing ceremony of Borneo Hackwknd 2026 at UNIMAS on Sunday (May 10).

Meanwhile, representative of the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia, Ely Syafitri Handayani, said programmes such as Borneo Hackwknd were increasingly important in today’s rapidly changing world as they encouraged innovation, teamwork, and cross-cultural understanding among youth in the region.

She said the programme had become more than just a hackathon competition, but also a platform for young people from Asian countries to collaborate and solve real-world challenges together.

“As part of the ASEAN family, Indonesia is proud to stand together with our neighbours in nurturing a generation that is innovative, compassionate and collaborative,” she said.

She encouraged participants to continue strengthening networks and refining the ideas developed during the programme, noting that the connections formed could eventually grow into future startups, research collaborations and regional solutions.

“You have the talent and creativity to shape the future of our region,” she said, urging participants to use technology not only for economic growth but also for social good and community development.

Borneo Hackwknd 2026 was organised in collaboration with Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) and brought together participants from across Asia to develop AI-driven solutions for regional social impact challenges.

Also present were the Deputy Consul General of Brunei Darussalam, Mohamad Nur’Izzuddin Osman; SDEC Chief Executive Officer Datuk Sudarnoto Osman; and Managing Director of Borneo Hackwknd 2026, Alvinash Loganathan.
