KUCHING: For the first time ever, Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad (BPHB) yesterday awarded scholarships to 10 outstanding students from the inaugural cohort of the Bintulu Port Scholarship Programme.

The scholarship presentation ceremony was held in conjunction with BPHB’s 29th Annual General Meeting (AGM) and the company’s Aidilfitri gathering yesterday (April 21).

BPHB president and group chief Executive Officer, Ruslan Abdul Ghani emphasised that this initiative was part of the company’s ongoing commitment to advancing education and providing inclusive opportunities for the youth of Sarawak.

“This is our first step toward nurturing a knowledgeable and skilled young generation who are ready to contribute to the state’s port and logistics industry,” he said.

One of the recipients, 20-year-old Denilson Lihan, shared that the scholarship significantly eased his family’s financial burden.

“I have four siblings who are all still in school. My father works as a lorry driver and my mother is a homemaker.

“With this scholarship, I no longer need to rely on my parents for an allowance as it includes a monthly stipend,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Nur Hazwani, 20, expressed her heartfelt appreciation for being selected as one of the 10 recipients out of more than 500 applicants.

“I’m truly thankful to have been chosen. I’ll give my best to make my parents and everyone who supported me proud, and I hope to set a good example for my younger siblings still in school,” she said.

For Stewart Wong, 20, the scholarship represents a meaningful opportunity and a new sense of hope.
